Viehbacher Says Sanofi to Donate 100M Doses of Swine Flu Vaccine (Novartis’ Vasella Still Says No)

We reported over the
weekend how NVS CEO Daniel Vasella (whose awesome lakefront home in
Risch, Switzerland can be seen via an
aerial shot right here) said he would not give away free swine flu
vaccine to low-income countries. You
guys voted on this and it still looks pretty split.
Today, Sanofi CEO Chris Viehbacher said he would donate 100M doses of the company’s swine flu vaccine to developing countries following the escalation of the virus to a pandemic, as well as offer significant discounts on any further orders.
You go Chris!
At a the Pacific Health Summit in Seattle today, Viehbacher said this:
“This is one of those areas where everyone has got to come together and support calls for common action. There (is) still lack of clarity about whether continued use of a seasonal vaccine would protect more lives than one to tackle the current pandemic, which appears to be relatively mild.”
Sanofi makes about 225M doses of seasonal flu vaccine and it’s estimated that the pharma giant could increase production to at least 800M doses of a vaccine designed for swine flu.
Stay tuned…
