Today’s Rumors: More Elan Hype, Zeltia Partnership on the Way

We say we’re a gossip site, but
really we just gossip about what’s going on in the (biotech) world.
One of the things that’s always a b*@!h is covering rumors. It’s
crazy, but someone starts a rumor somewhere (presumably) and people
start buying or selling. Here’s what’s floating around in the biotech
rumor world today:
- Elan (ELN) can’t stop getting buyout rumors if they tried. Days after ALL the big news sources said ELN was in talks with Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS), Bloomberg reported they never even made it past initial discussions. It didn’t matter because shares of ELN skyrocketed 20% to over $8 over the weekend on the news. Today, Reuters is reporting that Pfizer (PFE) is now in talks with ELN.
Though ELN didn’t comment, an Irish source said this:
“Elan are constantly in the headlights that someone is having a look at them. It’s impossible to tell if there is any meat on this bone. People are buying on the speculation but the volumes in Ireland are very light.”
The news has ELN up almost 5%…[Reuters]
- More rumors across the globe (depending on where you are now): Spanish biotechnology company Zeltia (ZEL.MC) says it’s thisclose to an agreement with a U.S company for its psoriasis drug, Kahalalide, which is derived from sea slugs. The statement was made by Pharmamar, a subsidiary of Zeltia and developer of the drug, managing director Luis Mora. [Reuters]
