The Axe Swings at Alcon – 260 Gone!

Alcon is canning 260 employees, half of them from the Dallas Ft. Worth area. The company said that sluggish U.S. drug sales and the recent launch by a rival company of a generic drug that competes directly with Tobradex treatment for eye infections are the reasons for the layoffs.

Let’s see what investor relations VP Doug MacHatton had to say:

“This is a difficult financial environment. It’s a difficult operating environment. The (U.S.) economy has had greater impact on patient dynamics – filling prescriptions, going to the doctor – than any other market in the world.”

What??!! No thanks for all the drug pushing? The freakin CEO didn’t even make a statement! It was the investor relations PR. Not cool Alcon, not cool indeed…

At least those laid off will get severance packages that include an additional two months on the payroll, a regular amount of payments based on their years of service, some extra cash to offset the price of health benefits and outplacement services.

Blah blah blah…
