Pfizer Legal Woes - Porn, Car Accidents, John Roberts and FraudFor some reason, there seems to be an uncanny amount of legal news today for the pharma giant. Let’s take a look at them…

*Senior U.S. District Judge Warren W. Eginton from Bridgeport Connecticut has issued a restitution to a female pornography victim. The female victim was awarded $200,000 after she brought suit against Alan Hesketh of Stonington, a Pfizer vice president who was sentenced to 78 months in prison for possessing and distributing nearly 2,000 photographs of child pornography. *Elizabeth Thompson has filed suit against Pfizer and one of its employees, Angela Hobick, alleging she was injured after Ms. Hobick collided with her vehicle. Hobick failed to stop at a red light and plowed into the rear of a line of stopped cars, which caused a multi-car collision. Thompson suffered bruises to her head and face, traumatic headaches, cervical disc inflammation spinal disc bulging and impingement and experienced a diminished enjoyment of life, her suit states. *Chief Justice John Roberts ownership in Pfizer may ultimately pose a problem for Wyeth v. Levine and the Washington Post has been quite vocal. The paper said today that Roberts should “move quickly to clear up the potential conflict.” The case, now before the Supreme Court, could determine whether injured patients can sue drug makers for selling FDA-approved drugs. Last year, Roberts recused himself from a case that involved Pfizer, because he owned shares in the company — the court ended up deadlocking 4-4. Wyeth’s lawyer has argued that there’s no need for Roberts to recuse himself from the case because the deal won’t close before the case is set to be decided. [The Washington Post]

*Finally, Pfizer plans to appeal the lawsuit it loss in which Pharmacia (acquired by Pfizer in 2003) allegedly inflated prices of medications sold to Wisconsin’s Medicaid program. The jury ordered Pfizer to pay the state $9M, which includes $7M for monetary losses and $2M for violations of consumer protection laws.[Medical News Today]
