Chemical Spill, Explosion at Merck!

Though no one was hurt thankfully, a chemical spill and minor explosion occurred at Merck’s research base in Boston earlier today. The building, which is located near Boston Children’s in the Longwood/Harvard Med School area, was completely evacuated of all its 350 employees. The accident was classified as a level 3 hazmat situation, the highest possible.
According to news, the accident happened when two employees from a chemical waste cleanup company were working in the hazardous material storage room near the loading dock when there was some sort of reaction between two chemicals in a drum.
Strangely, these types of events are not uncommon and are rarely reported by mass media, even when severe. Last August, an explosion at Bayer’s CropScience chemical plant killed two employees and although the story was covered by Jim Edwards at BNET Pharma and The New York Times, little was made of it on the big news channels.
Scary!!
