Buyout Rumors: Pfizer Buying Ratiopharm?

Buyout Rumors: Pfizer Buying Ratiopharm?Bloomberg is reporting that Pfizer is interested in acquiring more generic companies. The story appeared today in the German newspaper Handelsblatt which stated that the alliance with Aurbindo will not be enough to meet Pfizer’s growth expectations.

Ratiopharm makes the most sense. Ratio is on the auction block after founder Adolf Merckle committed suicide due to financial woes. The company announced last month that it has retained an adviser to seek a buyer, however there have been no updates since then. There’s also been speculation that Teva might be the most suitable buyer for Ratio, but again no further updates.

Finally, Actavis might make a good target for Pfizer to enter the U.S. market and Northern/Western Europe. Actavis, with global sales close to EUR 2B, would almost certainly help Pfizer meet its bottom line. Actavis has been rumored to be on the auction block for months now, however they have repeatedly downplayed any buyout talks.

Stay tuned…
