Ardea Biosciences (RDEA), which recently signed a nice $400M deal with Bayer ($35M of that upfront), said it will give the boot to 47% of its employees. The company said that most of the pink slips will be handed out to people working in discovery research and associated general and administrative personnel.

RDEA also says that the axings will save the company $2.3M for the remainder of 2009 and $6.6M each year thereafter. Unfortunately, the actual number of employees or severance costs were not provided, so that means no Math Time… :(

Nonetheless, here’s what CEO Barry Quart said about giving his employees the boot:

“We are implementing this restructuring to align our resources with our highest corporate priorities. While this is a difficult process, it is necessary to ensure that we become a sustainable enterprise and one that is less dependent on the capital markets in these unprecedented times. We are extremely grateful for the significant contributions made by all of our employees, including those who will be departing.”

The bloodbath continues…
